5 Natural Ways to Spider Proof Your Home

5 Natural Ways to Spider Proof Your Home

It's such a colourful view outside, painted by the warm autumn palette. But along with the falling leaves and crips air, we often get an invasion of crawlies. That's right, it's spiders mating season and they are everywhere! Some people have a genuine phobia and can't stand the sight of the little bug. For others, it's the struggle of having to remove cobwebs from all the corners of the house almost every day. Whatever your case is, you probably don't want them as roommates. Here are 5 natural ways to spider proof your home.

If you live in a house with a garden, you are at a higher risk of spider infestation. These little crawlies will use every opportunity to get in and stay warm. An open window, a door left ajar, a small crack - they'll take advantage. We can give you 2 ideas on how to keep them outside.

1.Horse chestnuts

Horse chestnuts are a natural repellent for spiders. Cut the nuts in half and place them in all 4 corners of the room, as well as on the outside part of the windows.

2. Peppermint spray

Another way to repel spiders is using peppermint spray. You can create it yourself. Dilute 20 drops of peppermint oil into a spray bottle filled with water. Then spray every crack, window frame and door inside your house to keep spiders away. If you think that won't be enough, or won't last long,  dip a cotton ball into the peppermint oil. Place where you think the spiders may enter to make sure they will stay out. Alternatively, if you don't like peppermint, you can use tea tree oil or eucalyptus oil.

If the 8-legged buggers have already moved in, here's what you can do to get rid of them.

3. Sprinkle diatomaceous earth

Diatomaceous earth is a powder from the fossils of the water creature diatom. It is safe for humans and pets, but it is deadly for spiders. Once a spider crosses over the powder, it penetrates its body and kills it. Then, you will just have to sweep away or vacuum the remains.

4. Vacuum the webs and eggs away

Killing the old spiders, won't do the job completely. They may have laid eggs already. The safest ways to get rid of new spiders is vacuuming. It will suck up any eggs and clean up the cobwebs. If you get a grown spider in your vacuum cleaner bag, release it outside afterwards. It won’t die in the bag and may crawl out again.

5. Keep a tidy home

Spiders love clutter, because it provides enough space to hide. If you clean your home regularly and don't pile items up, you will have less visitations from these crawling creatures.

If you notice that you have an ever-growing population of spiders in your home, this may be a clear sign that there is a serious infestation caused by other pests. What you need to do next is call pest control.
