Easing the lockdown means that many people will be coming back to their usual work places rather than working from home. However, more than 60% of the UK employed population is now reluctant to go back to the office. The main reason for this is concern over the working conditions and fear of catching and spreading the virus again. As an employer, who needs their staff back on site you need to ensure them you’ve taken all necessary measures to provide a safe working environment.

Office Deep Cleaning

If your commercial premises have been closed for over 6 weeks, they certainly need a deep clean before anyone could return safely to work on a regular basis. The office furniture should be moved and all surfaces under and behind it should be thoroughly cleaned.

In post-COVID cleaning all cleaners should be using a colour-coded system to avoid cross contamination and minimise infection spread.

Freeing Space

When returning to work, employees should have enough space to maintain social distancing where possible. So, in most cases, that means a stop, or at least a significant decrease of hot desking and more cubicles instead of open plan office desks.

This measure may require changing of work patterns, times and location. It is certainly a lot to consider and carefully plan for. Some workers may have to do shifts as opposed to a full workday or work some days from home and some at the office.

It is recommended for all businesses to conduct a back-to-office training on the new rules at the office. In addition, gentle reminders as posters or stickers should be placed in different sites of the building to prompt staff to follow health and safety guidelines.

Disinfecting and Maintenance

Deep cleaning of the premises will not be sufficient to make your office COVID-safe. Proper disinfection needs to be carried out immediately after the deep clean.
